Everything You Need to Know about Reiki

Reiki has grown in popularity as a healing practice that many people turn to for relaxation, stress relief and emotional balance. Many questions remain about what Reiki really is, and what to expect from a session. This post answers the most common questions.

  1. What happens during a Reiki session? A session lasts 50 minutes. You usually lie down clothed on a massage table or sit comfortably in a chair. The practitioner places their hands on specific areas of your body. You might feel warmth, tingling or a gentle pulsing sensation where the practitioner hands rest. Some people experience emotional releases such as crying, tears or laughter, calmness or fall asleep.

  2. How often should you receive Reiki? The frequency of sessions depends on your goals and needs. Some people benefit from weekly, bi-weekly or monthly. Listening to your body and discussing your goals with your practitioner can help determine the best schedule.

  3. What does Reiki feel like? People describe Reiki sensations differently but here are a few examples: Warmth or heat in the hands or body; tingling or buzzing sensations; feeling of lightness or floating; emotional releases; deep relaxation.

  4. Can Reiki help with specific health issues? Reiki is often used as a complimentary therapy for various conditions including: chronic pain such as arthritis or fibromyalgia; anxiety or depression; insomnia and sleep disorders; recovering from surgery; back pain and digestive problems. While Reiki can support well-being, it should not replace medical diagnosis or treatment.

  5. What can you expect after a Reiki session: you might feel: relaxed and calm; more energized or balanced; emotional release or clarity; temporary tiredness.
